Hi, right now everyone is working on some changes so hold on new things are coming. In an effort to kick this place back into action, we're doing round 9. In a few days, we'll be setting up a fills post that hopefully will work directly for archiving and an overflow post. Also we'll be doing a friending meme at tsn_km_gather so be looking out for that. I know some of the other mods have plans of their own which will be coming soon.

If you have any questions or ideas that I can help you with, feel free to PM me. I'll be around.

[RPF] Andrew/Jesse, girl!Jesse - secret relationship

(Anonymous)
Andrew and Jessica/Jessie/Jess have been dating for quite a while (maybe they met at a premiere or an awards event or something?), completely unbeknownst to the public because they didn't want the stress of being together in the public eye. When Andrew proposes and Jess finds out she's pregnant, this poses a bit of a problem. (Should she take off her ring in public? Wear tents for the next nine months? Invest in a really good mask? Carry a stack of non-disclosure agreements everywhere she goes? Never be seen in public ever?)

Bonus points for proud father-to-be Andrew accidentally spilling the beans during an interview and Jess being angry at first until she thinks oh my god I'm marrying this adorable man and having his child.
Bonus BONUS points for Jess calling Emma asking for advice and Emma being all SERIOUSLY, WOMAN? JUST BECAUSE MY PERIOD WAS LATE THAT ONE TIME DOESN'T MEAN I KNOW HOW TO HIDE A PREGNANCY FROM THE PRESS. QUIT JUDGING ME.

Re: [RPF] Andrew/Jesse, girl!Jesse - secret relationship

(Anonymous)
I forgot to add that they've been seen together in public before (because Andrew is a silly romantic and can't just not take his fiancée out), but when the paparazzi are around, they put on the ~oh hey we're just friends~ act, so the world just thinks they're epic BFFs (which they are, but they're so much more than that too).

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (1/?)

Note: I am going to attempt this, so this is just the beginning.

They meet by accident really, he knew so-and-so, she knew so-and-so who knew his so-and-so, and they both ended up at the same party for the familiar circle of young Hollywood friends. He was smitten at the first sight of her dimples when she smiled at a rather cheesy line he blurted out unthinking, that for all intents purpose he truly meant.

"What's a pretty thing like you hanging out with this lot?"

He is really better than that, well, maybe not.

She gives him this strange, disbelieving look, smiling the smile of a person finding humor in what he'd just said, and shakes her head to dismiss maybe a scathing retort, or laugh, or whatever, he can't really tell what she's thinking.

"You're not required to say that just because of our similar acquaintances," she insists instead, downplaying the truth behind his words, downplaying herself.

Truth, she isn't a Victoria Secret's model.  She is shorter than him, but really not by all that much. Her clothing looks to have been chosen for more comfort than showing off any of the attributes she may or may not have hidden underneath a pair of loose fitting and worn jeans, and the cotton tank barely visible under her heather grey zipped-up cardigan.  There are two attributes that can't be hidden though (thankfully): one, her blue eyes that express more innocence than he's ever seen in a person immersed in the business, and two, the natural curly, dark blonde hair that flows down over her shoulders yet not much further.  She is beautiful, there is no denying that, like a rare diamond or maybe more a diamond in the rough, something precious that needs to be treasure and protected.

"Though if you think so poorly of your friends, I might ask you the same," she adds, and all Andrew can do is bark out in laughter, making her smile and show off her dimples again.

Andrew realizes in that moment, he's falling fast and falling hard.

"A-Andrew," he introduces himself, extending his hand gentlemanly.

She stares down at the offered hand a moment before looking back up at him, a slight blush coloring her cheeks as she bites at her lip.

"It's nice to meet you, Andrew," she returns, shaking his hand and nothing more.

They stand together, looking at each other, their drinks, the antics of their friends around them, and back again to each other.  Andrew makes a decision.

"Do you want to get out of here?"

Relief spreads over her face, something he wasn't expecting, but then again, he doesn't really know her (he doesn't even know her name), at least not yet.

"God yes!" She exclaims, startling a laugh out of Andrew.  "I mean... I only came because Emma insisted I be here... This... This really isn't my... I'm not a big party person."

Andrew smiles, offering what he hopes is an understanding and reassuring look, as he gestures for her to follow him out of their friends' home.  They are halfway to his car when she speaks up.

"Jesse," she starts, staring down at the drive as they walk.

"Pardon?"

She stops and looks up at him, the innocent eyes from before looking nervous and uncertain now.  It makes her even more beautiful in his eyes.

"My name," she explains.  "My name is Jesse."

"Jesse," Andrew repeats her name, rolling it around his head a moment, testing it out to get used to saying it.  "Short for Jessica?"

Jesse shakes her head and shrugs.  "No, just Jesse.  J-E-S-S-E. My mom was aiming for something different.

Looking down at Jesse as they approach the car, Andrew can't help thinking Jesse's mom hit the nail on the head.

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (2a/?)

"Okay, dish, because you weren't even at the party five minutes before pulling a Houdini act.  I believe that might be some kind of record, even for you, Miss Eisenberg," Emma says by way of greeting, sliding into the opposite side of the diner booth.

After a few frantic texts shared between the two woman the night before, much to Andrew's amusement, Jesse was able to assure Emma that she was not curled up in her hotel room bed, wrapped in her comfort hoodie, sipping a large cup of hot tea and reading a tomb on Russian history aka Jesse's version of wallowing in self pity, and agreed to meet up with her best friend for a late breakfast the following morning. Jesse would only be in town for another day before heading back East, back home to her comfy apartment, and her cats, and her routine.  She loves visiting California, loves seeing her best friend, but could never see herself actually living out here.

"I don't know what you think there is to dish," Jesse returns, avoiding eye contact because if anything, she knows it's her eyes that give her away every single time. "There's nothing to tell.  You know I don't care for the party scene.  I left early, that's all."

Emma remains quiet, assessing Jesse and her words, taking a moment to gauge the truth behind Jesse's words.  Jesse knows she has no hope of keeping anything from Emma, Emma is her best friend after all, but this is what they do. Question and avoid, push and evade, until one of them gives in (usually meaning Jesse).

"Huh?," Emma hums, flagging their waitress down to order a cup of coffee.  Once the waitress has filled her cup and taken their orders, the inquisition continues (turns out Emma knows more than she's letting on).  "So, I heard you met a certain Quasi-Brit last night."

Jesse glares at Emma, or at least tries to, but it really only ends up being an uncomfortable stare.  She doesn't offer Emma anymore information?

Emma nods, knowing this game far too well.  "He's kind of hot."

"Emma!" Jesse can't stop the blush she feels heating her face.

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (2b/?)

Emma smirks teasingly.  "So you have met him."

"If you already know, then why ask?" Jesse asks, not really annoyed, but not really wanting to talk about it, since she's not really sure what there is or could be to talk about.

"Come on Jess, this is what girlfriends do.  We dish, we share, we complain about guys.  All I know is that you both disappeared last night, and someone saw you talking before. I just put two and two together, but I want details, preferably juicy details."

"Well... I don't know if I have any, as you put it, juicy details.  Nothing happened, we just... You know... We talked."

"Talked?"

"Yes, talked," Jesse repeats just in case Emma needs to hear it again.

"What'd you talk about?"

"I don't know... Stuff... Our careers, or more lack there of at the moment...  music... Um... Life... We talked."

Sometimes Emma can be quite annoying.

"Where did you talk?"

"Is that even relevant, where we talked?"

"Trust me, it's relevant."

"Nothing happened," Jesse insists, again.

"Thou dost protest too much.  I think something happened," Emma presses, complete with brow waggling.

"I'm telling you, nothing happened," she says again. "We left the party, I wasn't going to take some guy I just met back to my hotel room, and so he found a place... and we just sat... in his car... talking."

Emma sputtered her sip of coffee.

"Very ladylike," Jesse comments, hoping to distract her friend, but she should know better by now.

"God, Jesse, you are totally from the wrong era," Emma states, dabbing her chin with a napkin.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Parking?  Really?  You do know this isn't Happy Days, right.".

Jesse sighs.  "We were talking, not parking.  God, after all this time I've put up with you I'd think you'd know me better by now."

Emma starts cackling loudly, which embarrasses Jesse a little with the attention the outburst pulls their way.

"Yes, and I would think you would know me better to know I am just teasing you," Emma says, resting a hand on Jesse's arm.  "I believe you, you know, but wasn't there anything?  Is he going to call you again?  He is, you know..."

"Hot," Jesse supplies, repeating Emma's assessment of Andrew.  "So you've said."

Emma snorts.  "Well, admit it, he is."

The only answer Jess provides is the duck of her head as her cheeks flush even darker than before, because Andrew was definitely hot (Emma's words). But would he ever call her again?  She really doesn't know.

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (3a/?)

LAX is crowded as usual, people coming, people going, people complaining, and some just loitering about.  It's just another day at the airport, another trip for Jesse from the West coast back to the East, with ticket check in attitude, long lines at the security check, and a very unwelcomed hands on search after failing the walk through twice.  Jesse has just grabbed her carry-on items from the X-ray conveyor and is slipping on her shoes (still tied) when her phone starts ringing.

"Shit," she curses, hopping on one foot while attempting to pull the other shoe fully on, ignoring the annoyed looks from other passengers in her mad scramble to not miss the call, whoever is calling.

"Hey... Hello?  Hello?" Jesse answers the phone breathlessly, still trying to shoulder her dingy backpack, being mindful of the people scurrying by, one person shoving by without even looking back.

"Jesse?"

Her name is spoken hesitantly, as if the person on the other end isn't even sure she'd pick up, if this was actually her number, but for all the uncertainty in her caller's voice, she is very certain of who the man is, with his distinctive British-like accent and innocently gentle tone... She could listen to him repeat her name over, and over, and over...

"Jesse?  This is... This is Jesse, yeah?"

Jesse shakes her head and forces herself to focus on the voice rather than her errant thoughts, which can be really difficult sometimes.  "Yeah... I mean, yes, yeah, this is Jesse.  Andrew?"

"Oh, thank God!" The sound of relief that floods over the line surprises Jesse in its honesty and warmth, surprises Jesse as much as the fact it is Andrew calling her in the first place.  "Where are you?"

The question brings Jesse to an abrupt stop in the middle of the concourse, much to the annoyance of the person following directly behind her, nearly losing her grip on the small roller case she's been dragging behind her.

"Hello, to you too would be much better etiquette, don't you think?" Jesse returns, securing her hold of her suitcase handle before heading again in the direction of her gate.

Andrew laughs easily on the other end, something she is a little amazed she is capable of pulling from the guy, or maybe more she's amazed the laugh isn't really made at her expense but because what she's said is generally funny.

"You... You are right, yeah, right" Andrew agrees, the happy, bubbly laugh just barely being contained now.  "Hi, Jesse.  How are you this fine morning?"

This time it is Jesse's turn to laugh.  "Much better, but what about a pip, pip, cherrio?"

"Aw, now you're mocking me," Andrew fake-whines, and Jesse can easily picture the accompanying faux-pout as well, which makes her laugh again.

"I can see your dimples," Andrew comments absently, before amending, "well, not really, but I can picture them, and they're..."

"A unavoidably embarrassing," Jesse offers in finish of whatever Andrew was going to say.

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (3b/?)

"Hmmm, if that also means lovely, then yes, they are unavoidably embarrassing."

"You're insane," Jesse says, dismissing Andrew's obviously delusional state of mind. "Why are you calling me?"

"Well... I asked for your number, and then you gave it to me, after much debate of why I would even want or need it, and I said I would call. So, here I am... calling.

"I didn't think you would..."

"What?"

Jesse finally reaches her gate and stops by a pillar just outside the seating area and sighs heavily.  "I guess... I mean, I just assumed... I thought you wouldn't, you know, call."

"Why wouldn't I?"

Jesse doesn't have an answer for that question.  Well, she does have an answer (or two, or three, or more):  too much baggage, too boring, too much you; or at least that is what she's been told in the past.

"Jesse?"

"I'm not anything special," Jesse states.  "I'm just... me.  I read too much, I require way too much therapy that isn't even enough, my cats - that aren't even technically mine - rule my home, I prefer to stay in on a weekend, and..."

"And I think that all is lovely, I think you are lovely, and anyone who might've said otherwise to you... well good, I'm glad they did because now I have a chance to prove them wrong."

"Andrew, it's not that simple," Jesse begins, squelching down the hope thumping in her chest saying maybe, just maybe this time will be different.  "We don't even live on the same side of the country, and that's only when you are living here."

"While that is true... Look, Jesse, it's not like I'm asking you to marry me, I'm just... I just... I like you, and want to get to know you.  We can be friends from different coasts, yeah?"

It's hard to ignore the pang, pricking in her chest at the mention of being friends, because honestly, it is her own dumb luck to find a guy that seems interested in her as much as she is him, and due to location, friends is the best they can be, at least the best they can be for their own sanity.  Dating really sucks.

"Jesse?"

Jesse clears her tight throat and concedes the point.  "Friends?"

"Definitely."

This is how Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield meet by accident.  Two people on completely opposite side of the country who never would have otherwise met if it hadn't been for so-and-so's party, and her best friend forcing her to attend.  There really was nothing for her lose, letting Andrew into her life.  Everyone needs friends, and yeah, so she is a bit attracted to the guy, but he was, as Emma pointed out, hot.  At least they had an entire country between them, giving Jesse the chance to let go of what could never be.

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (4a/?)

He is pouring over scripts his agent has forwarded, looking for the next project to line up.  While beggars can't be chooser when one's career is just beginning, and he barely being known by name or even face in the states, Andrew still finds himself holding back in doing just anything to get his name out there.  He needs work, but he's not starving either, so even if he has half a dozen scripts in front of him, there is no guarantee he is going to say yes to even one (though his agent always forces him out on one she's pre-selected just to keep your head in the game she claims).  His moderate success in England has afforded him a little time, at least for now, but he knows eventually, if things don't turn around, he may no longer have the luxury of choice.

Andrew looks up from the stack of scripts when his cell phone beats out the Spiderman theme, a smile unstoppable from spreading his mouth.  After picking up the phone and viewing the caller ID, he smiles impossibly wider because in the last four months of them being long distance friends, this is the first time Jesse has ever initiated a call.

"Hey Beautiful," he greets as he always calls her a) because she is and b) he knows it flusters her a bit when he does so.

Her silence on the other end of the line is confirmation enough of her discomfort at being called that, in addition to her definite discomfort in initiating the call in the first place.  He waits for Jesse to get her footing, letting her find her way back in control.

"Um... I think you've got the wrong number," Jesse eventually returns, no humor in her voice.

"Seeing as I'm not the one doing the ringing, I could hang up and ring you back to be certain, though I assure you my greeting would remain the same."

This sparks a little laughter from her end, but it's not a full-bodied laugh, or giggle or even snicker.  He can almost feel her stress though the phone connection alone, and all he wants to do is make it better, whatever the matter is. All he wants to do is wrap his arms around Jesse and tell her whatever it is, it's going to be okay.

"Sometimes I don't believe you are real," Jesse says quietly, releasing a breath and sigh that is heavy.

"I might say the same of you," Andrew returns warmly, because while he believes he himself is a dime a dozen, there really is no one else like Jesse on Earth.

"I might believe you because even I can't believe I exist."

"Jesse..." he starts by way is warning Jesse to be nice to herself.  "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," she whispers in reply, which obviously is a lie because there has to be some reason to why she is calling.  "Nothing new anyway."

"Jess?"

"Really, it's nothing, nothing really.  I don't even know why I'm bothering you..."

"Jesse," Andrew interrupts.  "You're my friend, even if you think it's nothing I'm sure it's not nothing, so I want to hear.  I call you all the time with millions of nothings, and you listen.  At the minimum, I can return the favor and lend an ear."

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (4b/?)

Jesse remains quiet for a few seconds, and even in the silence Andrew believes he can almost hear Jesse biting her lip.

"I just... I'm feeling a little inadequate today," Jesse begins, and Andrew knows already that Jesse feeling inadequate is not just a today thing but an everyday thing.  "There's this movie role I want... Well, at least I think... It's just something... I don't know, almost out of my league but perfect, if that's even possible, and I have to put this reel together to send it in and I don't even know where to begin, or if I should begin, or if I'm just... I don't want to make a fool of myself, and I don't want to burn any bridges so soon in my career... Especially with this writer... And I just..."

She pauses there to breath, and get her bearings back.

"You just needed to get that out your system in order to move on?" Andrew offers by way of finishing her thought.

"I..." Jesse pauses and takes a deep breath, releasing it slowly.  "I guess... Why... How is it you always have a way of making me feel better, even in my worst freak-out moments, even from the other side of the country?"

"You're welcome," Andrew says, warmed by her admittance of his affect on her.

Jesse giggles over his none-answer response.

"There's my girl," Andrew teases, pleased to hear her finally laugh, relaxed.  "Jesse, no matter what you do, you will be brilliant, and I'm not just saying that out of friendship.  You really are a talented actress and anyone would be lucky to cast you in their movie."

"Andrew..."

"No, seriously, I should know, I was a fan before we even met, remember?  You'll be great, whatever it is, and I'll be the one, pointing at your imagine on the movie poster..."

Jesse's groans.  "Ugh, please, don't even mention a poster..."

"Oh, but I will, I will go on.  It will be huge, and no one will be able to miss it, and you'll be beautiful and I will say, See that amazing actress? That amazing woman? I am the luckiest guy in the world, being able to call her my friend."

"Andrew?"

"Yeah?"

Jesse gets quiet again, and he can't even fathom what's spinning through her head or what she is going to say, it could be anything from a simple shut up to a teasing accusation of you're insane or even a jab at herself like and peels of laughter will ripple around you, but even Jesse is able to surprise him it seems.

"Thank you," she says more sincerely, more honestly than he has ever heard her before.

"Better?"

"Honestly?"

"Well, you could try lying," he offers.  "But I've come to believe I know you well enough to tell the difference."

Jesse laughs again, quietly, accepting the truth in his statement.  They've come a long way from that first night spent in his car doing nothing but talking (much to his friends' and even his agent's disbelief).  Even if he is ready for more than simple friendship, he realized that first night, through all the nervous tremors in Jesse's slender and elegant hands, and her uncertain stuttered-stopped words, that Jesse's not one quick to jump feet first.  He doesn't even know if she will ever really be ready to jump, but he'd be damned if he didn't stick around to find out.

"Yeah," she finally answers, a content air in her tone.  "Much better."

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (5a/?)

Note:  For the purposes of this AU, Mark Zuckerberg is also a girl.  I won't be going into too much detail about the whole Girl!Mark/Eduardo relationship, but thought this needed mentioning now.

Fate, an event (or a course of events) that will inevitably happen in the future, also referred to as destiny or kismet.  Emma totally believes in it, lives by it actually, but for Jesse the idea of fate, that everything happens for a reason making the ending result more a given than a possibility is just something she never allowed herself to believe in.  There is just something unsettling about allowing control over one's life being left in the hands of past decisions.  If anything, she can admit to things fate-like being at best strange coincidences, and that is the only explanation she can allow when she finds herself at a table of four, consisting of screen writer Aaron Sorkin, director David Fincher and her new co-star (and long distance friend) Andrew Garfield.  Correction, an unlucky coincidence, or maybe just the type of coincidence that her life alone can only provide.  The more uncomfortable the better it seems.  The score:  Coincidences one, Jesse negative ten.

"Well, this is a happy surprise," Sorkin had said when it was revealed the two leads already knew each other, and as more than passing acquaintances.

Jesse didn't see it as such a happy turn of events though.  It's not that she wouldn't love working with Andrew in some capacity within their career paths, but on the Facebook movie?  There is just something about the on-again, off-again love of two best friends that toes too close to the line of friendship she shares with Andrew.  Not that there has ever been anything on or off between them, but she has picked up on a few of Andrew's insinuations of wanting more or at least to test the waters of beyond friendship, but she keeps ignoring them.  There's always a voice in the back of her head (one that sounds exactly like her own) reminding her that Andrew is too good to be true, to good to last.  The last time she let herself believe in something she knew was too good to be was with her friend Justin, and in the end he not only broke her heart without even realizing it (Jesse, I just don't see you that way... I'm sorry), and she ended up losing one of her closest friends because they couldn't figure out how to maintain their close friendship after such an embarrassing and awkward admittance.

Granted Andrew would ever hurt her like that, at least she doesn't think he would, but after Justin, it's just always felt safer to keep her distance.  Her mother would probably have a few choice words for her, especially if she ever meets Andrew in the flesh.  It would be something along the lines of not allowing the past to write the future, but Jesse has yet to really broach the subject of Andrew with her mom, so she's been spared the lectures for now.  The last time she did speak to her mom on the phone though, when Jesse was officially offered the role of Mark Zuckerberg, and Jesse spoke briefly of her co-star Andrew Garfield, she could tell by the tone in her mom's voice that nothing was getting past her.  Jesse knows surer than anything else in her life that her next visit home will be an interesting one.

The meeting with Sorkin and Fincher goes amazingly well.  The written characters were discussed, their perceived motivations, their intense connection, and what was expected of the actors portraying these delicate roles. The meeting was more about feeling out the dynamics of their chosen actors than anything else.

"I want everyone involved in the project to take their individual role seriously.  We aren't here to place blame on one person.  We just want to tell a story, not the story, just an idea of the story.  If we don't lose sight of that... We are going to make an amazing film."

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight 5b/?)

It was probably one of the best pep-talks she has even been witness to, and actually moved by.  When Jesse shifts her eyes to Andrew, she knows he fells the same and is just as moved as she is.

Fincher ends the meeting with necessities about sending dates and accommodation information to their agents and that they will be in touch.  The meeting ends far sooner than she expected, or perhaps it's just that the time flew by as it's been over two hours since their discussions began.  Everyone stands and shakes hands, pleasantries are exchanged, and then Andrew and she are left in the room alone.

"So," Andrew begins, hedging his way around the table toward her.  "You're my Mark."

Jesse snorts.  "And you're my Wardo."

Andrew laughs in return.  "Why didn't you tell me?"

Jesse shrugs.  "I just don't like talking about things... so soon.  I don't know... I fear I might jinx it, ya know?"

Andrew's eyes soften, and he smiles, not sadly, maybe more adoringly, but that can't be true because that would be ridiculous really, but his attention on her, it leaves her feeling prickly, uncertain, confused.

"Hey," he says when she attempts to turn away, hand wrapping around her bicep easily.  "It's okay, I get it.  I didn't say anything either, remember?  We... We are more like than you think."

When she looks back up at Andrew, there is only honesty staring back.  She smiles, and laughs again.  "I guess that's why we're friends."

"I think it's a little more than that," Andrew says, giving her arm a squeeze.  We were meant to meet."

"Do you believe in fate?" What are the odds that two of her best friends adhere to the ideas of destiny and fate and all that mumbo-jumbo?

"I don't know," Andrew replies.  "Sometimes.  I mean, we met by chance, became friends, audition for the same film not telling each other and, here we are.  It's quite amazing, if you think about it."

"Hmmm," Jesse hums, thinking about what Andrew said, but she still doesn't believe.  "Strange coincidences."

"They really are all the same, yeah?  Whatever you believe.  I'm just thankful for it all.  It brought me you."

"Andrew..."

"Hey, come on.  I'll buy you lunch," Andrew says, changing the subject.  "I know this smashing little place that you have to try.  Everything is heavenly."

"You don't have to buy..."

"Shush," Andrew interrupts.  "You are my friend, and you are visiting my side to the Staes.  It is my duty, as a friend, to extend hospitality.  Are you hungry?"

She will not admit to skipping breakfast this morning due to the crazy-butterfly nerves occupying her stomach, because she doesn't need mother-hen-Garfield on her about taking care of herself, but she is starving.

"I could eat," she answers playing down the state of her hunger.  "But I can pay..."

"There is no discussion," Andrew argues back, shaking his head as if that will send the point home.  "My territory, my treat.  Next time I visit New York, you can pay me back."

There was no arguing at that point, because the idea of Andrew actually visiting New York, visiting her is almost surreal.  They've been friends for almost six months now and shared no more than their cell phone numbers and words.  Now, with this movie on the horizon, working side by side, day in and day out, she has a feeling they are quickly going to get to know each other even more intimately.  The thought of such close proximity causes the butterflies to begin fluttering again.

"Fine," she finally allows, offering a small smile.  "But don't be surprised if the best I can offer is a cat hair coated couch and a frozen TV dinner.  This may come as a shock, but I don't really like going out all that much to really show you my territory."

"That sounds perfect."

"Really?"

"More than you know."

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (6a/?)

He's not panicking, no, it's completely and utterly ridiculous to be panicking over the simple fact that he will be living with Jesse, who has just about become his best friend over the last few months, even if the bulk of their friendship has been spent over cell phone conversations and text message wars.  Granted, it's not that they are being forced to share actual living quarters, but adjoining condo units are far closer quarters than they have ever shared, especially when the duration of their friendship to date has contained thousands of miles between them.  On one hand, it's a blessing in disguise as it could open up opportunity for what they have to possible (hopefully) grow into something more.  On the other hand, this could end up completely ruining the carefully balanced relationship they do share, and in the end, really screw up a movie that has the potential of being the most amazing thing they've ever had a part in, and that is the last thing Andrew ever wants to see happen.

Andrew's been pacing the is new (temporary) living room for going on twenty minutes now, hands wringing together when they aren't scrunching and twisting the ends of his hair.  He only arrived just after noon to the condo unit, and the first thing he did after unlocking the door and dropping his suitcase in the small entryway was jog next door to ring Jesse's bell.  She was scheduled to arrive earlier in the morning, having a shorter distance travel and no layovers to contend with, but after three sets of rings it was clear she wasn't in.  Not like she has to be, Jesse is an adult and completely capable of taking care of herself.  This being a new city and all she was probably out seeing what there was to see, but that thought leaves a little pang in his chest thinking about Jesse enjoying all these new experiences alone, wishing they could just do it all together.

The sound of the adjacent condo's door slamming shut brings Andrew's pacing and rumination to an abrupt stop.  Strangely, though he couldn't wait to see her again upon landing, he finds himself unable to move.  It's weird all of the sudden, being able to have this access to Jesse that doesn't require coordinating time zones and schedules or even a phone.  For the next however many months, he can simply get up and walk next door and there she will be. It's strangely wonderful, he thinks.

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (6b/?)

One foot in front of the other, Andrew walks himself to Jesse's door, paying no mind to his slight hesitation before ringing the doorbell. He is surprised when there is no answer, being fairly certain that it was her door slamming shut and that she is home, and a little shocked at being possibly ignored.  He rings again, and again, but just before he resorts to pounding on the door, feeling more concerned than hurt, she finally responds.

"Who is it?" The question is sharply asked, almost sounding defensive and definitely not a normal reaction from his usually soft-spoken and sometimes backwards friend.

"Jesse?  It's Andrew."

All remains quiet on the other side of the door.

"Jesse?"

"Go away, Andrew."

Definitely not his normal Jesse.  "Jess... Are you alright?  What's wrong?"

"It's... I'm fine... Please Andrew..." but she stops there, probably taking deep breaths, most definitely biting at her lips, maybe even her nails in worry, and most certainly freaking out over God knows what.

"Jesse, open the door," Andrew insists.  "Come on, it's our first night.  I'd like to spend a bit of time with you."

"I'm not really... in the mood tonight," she replies wistful, as if she's warring with her own decision.  "I'm sorry..."

"Jesse, come on, none of that.  It's me, and I have't seen you in three weeks and I've been looking forward to today like, forever..."

"Your math is horrible," she jokes, a good sign when it comes to Jesse and her down moods, so he laughs along with her.

"Well, it always feels like forever," he clarifies, feeling his hope sinking because since seeing her at the first meeting for the movie, he's been counting down the days until this moment and they've felt like very long days.  "I don't know what's wrong, but I'd like to help."

He stays at her front door forehead and hand pressed against its surface, willing her to open the door.  He doesn't understand what's going on with her, wants to help if he can, and hopes it's nothing he has said or done.  She is the last person he would ever want to hurt, if he can help it.

"Andrew?"

He perks up immediately.  "Yeah?"

Jesse doesn't say anything else, but he hears he door unlock and takes it as an invitation nonetheless.  When he enters her side of the unit, he sees her back walking away towards the twin of his own living room.  She's dressed comfortably in a pair of navy blue running pants with green and white piping stripes up the side seam, and a green hoodie sweatshirt with the hood pulled up over her head. Jesse looks like she is sulking.

"Hey," Andrew greets, following slowly behind, receiving a half-hearted backwards wave, but she doesn't turn around, if anything she shrinks furher into herself, arms wrapping around to the point he can see her fingers curl around her sides.  "Jess, if there's something wrong, I'd really like to help.  It can't be all that bad."

"It could be... I mean... It's really just stupid... really... I don't...". Jesse's words trail off into the silence of not knowing what to say, or how to explain.

Andrew reaches out to touch her shoulder and while she initially stiffens up at the contact, her shoulders ease into a relaxed, submissive slouch giving him the opportunity to gently turn her about face.  Her head remains down, eyes trained in the floor, or their feet, and all he can catch are a few curls peeking out from the hood of her sweatshirt.  She seems so lost, and maybe she is.  Maybe being uprooted and transplanted for an extended period of time always has this affect on her, and he can understand the feeling.  He remembers his first time away from home in a technically new and exciting country with no one but his agent close at hand to care if he was doing alright.  He gets it, but he knows it doesn't have to be this way.

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (6c/?)

Using both hands, Andrew slowing lifts and slides Jesse's hood off her head, his eyes going wide against his better judgement as he does so, not really surprised, she is portraying Mark Zuckerberg after all, but not expecting to see the drastic change right out the gate.  He definitely knows better than to laugh at her own reaction to her new haircut, even if his laugh would not in humor but pure adoration.  For as much as Jesse is like no other woman he has ever known, she is still just a girl, and it's comforting knowing that.

Jesse's back goes ridged when he runs the fingers of his right hand through her short curls, shaking him off, warning him not to make the wrong mover or say the wrong thing.  She is right to warn him as he has been known to stick his foot in him mouth on occasion.

"Your hair..."

"Looks like broccoli," she finishes what he definitely wasn't planning on saying, but he can't help the breath of laughter that escapes.

"No, not what I was going to... but I'd say more cauliflower..."

She jerks away, attempting to pull her hood back up but Andrew stops her before she gets too far.

"Hey, no, seriously, it looks lovely," he assures, knowing she needs the reaffirmation more than anything.

"What glasses are you looking through, and can I borrow them?"

Andrew grins madly.  "I call them my Jesse Colored Spectacles.  You could borrow them, but they only work when looking at Jesse properly."

Jesse smiles, and even laughs quietly at his teasing joke, which is quite an accomplishment in Andrew's opinion.  A monumental feat actually, especially in such a short time.  He knows she isn't vain, or even mildly into her looks, but such a drastic change that is more against her will and what she would normally do can be quite a shock to the system.  He did love her hair before, the length having extended down the middle of her back since they first met, but this cut, while not preferred by Andrew, isn't unflattering either.  If anything, her eyes are more the focal point upon first glance, and her dimple can no longer be hidden.  With her hair gone, there is nothing for her to hide behind, which he now understands as the real problem for Jesse.

"I look like Little Orphan Annie," Jesse faux pouts, but there is a twinkle in her eyes Andrew knows he's responsible for that makes him smile right back.

"Better?"

"Only mildly," Jesse reluctantly (playfully) admits, a smirk sneaking out.

"Mildly will do," Andrew accepts, taking hold of her hand.  "You are always beautiful to me."

"Your spectacles are in need of repair," Jesse states, squeezing his hand and smiling, her dimples popping out.

"Nah," Andrew says, holding her hand a little tighter.  "I think I like they way the work just fine, thanks."

FILL: Hiding in Plain Sight (7a/?)

Note:  background music repeating in my head while writing and thinking about writing this:  "Falling In" by Lifehouse

--

No matter how she tries to calm the anxiety twitch-scratching at her nerves, she still ends up feeling like one of the many cats she's fostered, high on catnip during a full moon, trying to chase its own shadow and failing miserably. It takes exactly three days for her to finally crack, not that she wasn't feeling a little stir-crazy in the quiet of her location condo unit during the first two nights, but it isn't until the third, actual filming still not in motion quite yet, of being completely alone in a living space far larger than she's used to that Jesse decides she's had enough.  Pillow under one arm, and blanket under the other, Jesse heads out of the unsettling silence to Andrew's side of the two unit condo.  She ignores the fact she is in a pair of very unflattering flannels and the dingiest fuzzy slippers known to woman or man.  She also ignores the shake in her hand as she knocks on the door, not exactly brave enough to use the doorbell leaving a possible out should Andrew not hear her knock.

Jesse is mid fidget, biting at the side of her thumb, debating making a dash back to her unit when Andrew opens his door with an ear to ear grin, a laugh barely hidden under his breath.

"Je-Jesse?  What are you..."

"Um... Hi?"

Andrew laughs again, eyes traveling from the top of her fuzzy-curled head all the way down to her fuzzy-matted yet still comfy slippers.  Had it been anyone else, Jesse might have taken offense to the once-over, but this is Andrew, and she could hear more warmth in his tone than any malice, eyes looking impossibly happier than they normally do.  She tries to overlook how much better he looks in his own flannel sleep pants and black t-shirt, blaming his all over the place hair that looks strikingly cool in its disarray for one upping her.

"Come, come," Andrew gestures, stepping aside so she can pass through the doorway, bedding and all, not even questioning why she is dragging it along with her, or why she's in her pajamas or even why she is there at nearly midnight.  He's kind of wonderful in that respect (a lot wonderful actually, for putting up with her).

Jesse doesn't enter right away, fidgeting again, balancing her weight between her right and left foot, not making eye contact with Andrew.  She knows this is stupid.  She is a grown woman after all, has (basically) lived on her own since relocating to New York and should be able to handle a couple weeks/months location shoot on her own as well, but it just isn't that easy.

"Do you mind... I mean, can I stay... here?" Jesse asks, eyes still trained in the tips of her slippers, her hold tightening around the pillow and comforter in her arms.  She must look really pathetic, standing there, an almost mess because she can't handle being alone, but all Andrew does is reach out and relieve her of her bedding.
