Part 10 is open and prompts from 1-4 can be re-posted here if they were not filled.

IMPORTANT: please DO NOT post prompts about any non-public people as part of a prompt. for example: randi zuckerberg is fine as she is a public figure both on the internet and on facebook itself. priscilla chan is NOT as she is not a public figure.

if you're in doubt, please message the mod or leave a comment in the discussion post.

NEW: ♥ PLEASE comment with the first of your fill to the PROMPT and then all future updates as a comment to the FIRST PART of the fill. this makes it easier for both the WIP spreadhseet and for archiving stuff on delicious. it also helps people who are trying to catch up on updates and don't have to look through every fill on the prompt (should it have more than one). thank you.

It's finally time for part 10, it's been a few months but even after the article of doom, we're still open.

If you have any questions or ideas that I can help you with, feel free to PM me. I'll be around.

have fun!

THERE WILL BE UNMARKED SPOILERS. enter at your own risk! :D

i know you guys are enjoying this meme and i appreciate that but please can you put the SUBJECT HEADER on your prompt. you would REALLY be helping me out if you could do that. it just saves time for me when i'm trying to tag everything in delicious.

AND PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT re-post prompts from parts five, six, seven, eight, or nine. the delicious is around for people to find prompts they may not have already seen. We know there's been some issues but we're working on it with pinboard. No duplicates from this round either. THANK YOU.

R1 Re-prompt: Eduardo/Mark + Dustin - dilution scene

I just watched the movie and Dustin's FACE during the scene with Eduardo breaking Marks laptop/lawyer up asshole etc.

I kind of want fic where Dustin gets pissed off at Seans continued attempts to belittle Eduardo in Marks eyes and has a gonat him in front of the office - and Mark. If Mark realises what's done, all the better. If you wanna include Chris/Dustin then I won't complain either :P

Just have Dustin lay into Sean. MAYBE EVEN PUNCH HIM? IDEK.

Re: R1 Re-prompt: Eduardo/Mark + Dustin - dilution scene

We have a screencap of that anywhere? ...i've never seen it.

Re: R1 Re-prompt: Eduardo/Mark + Dustin - dilution scene

Okay, here goes. Warning for... language, I guess. And momentary violence!

Part I

Sean isn't a constant presence in the office, hasn't been since the night of the million members party when Eduardo had walked away and Sean had given cocaine to teenagers - had allegedly given cocaine to teenagers, everyone says, rarely without a roll of their eyes. Dustin doesn't feel strongly one way or the other about that, or maybe the truth is that his feelings aren't sure which direction they want to go.

On the one hand, a fundamental aspect of Dustin's personality - a core part of his code, since he's a programmer and his body is less cells and blood than it is zeroes and ones, though he's not half as far-gone as Mark - is that he likes everyone. Period. There are a very, very few exceptions. One time, during Harvard, Chris had dated a guy who had insisted on keeping their relationship a secret. Dustin had had the dubious luck of over-hearing the guy on the phone one day, joking with a friend about how awesome it was just to have a 'casual fuck' waiting whenever you couldn't pick a girl up at the bar. Dustin had taken that opportunity to hack the guy's e-mail and use it to send an unheard-of amount of gay porn to everyone on the guy's contact list, including his friends, his mom, and the Vice-Dean of his program, because Chris was nobody's casual fuck.

Usually, though, Dustin doesn't walk around with visceral hatred for anyone. So it makes hard for him to actively dislike Sean, even though the comments he made the night Eduardo smashed the laptop made Dustin cringe. Even though Sean's a big part of the reason why Sean is here and Eduardo is not, and even though Eduardo and Dustin were bros first.

Dustin wants to be bros with everyone. Unfortunately, sometimes other people aren't bros with each other, and that makes it hard.

There's also the part where Eduardo and Mark had a maybe-almost-kind-of something about to happen, and Sean had stepped in and precluded that train from ever coming into the station.

And Dustin can't help it, he wants his friends to be happy, even when they're doing absolutely nothing to help themselves, the way Mark and Eduardo are.

So when Sean periodically does come into the office - and flirts with the interns, and ruffles Dustin's hair, and hops up on the edge of Mark's desk to talk about whatever he and Mark even talk about, Dustin doesn't know - Dustin sort of acts like things are more or less okay.

Except it's hard when Chris makes eye contact from twenty feet away and they both know how easy it would be to come down on Sean's side, to just write Eduardo off as a bad job, if Chris and Dustin had it in them to do it. Sean is a charming guy, the life of the party. He'll joke with Dustin and talk shop with Chris, he's always been that way. Except they can't just write Eduardo off, for Mark's sake or their own, so neither one of them has a template for how to act around Sean when they both know he has it in him to be a callous dickwad.

To be honest, Chris is better at it than Dustin is, but Dustin's always been a heart-on-his-sleeve type of guy.

Re: R1 Re-prompt: Eduardo/Mark + Dustin - dilution scene

Part II

So Sean comes into the office, not all the time, but often enough, and he mostly makes small talk, though he'll throw some advice about this or that Mark's way if it occurs to him. Dustin doesn't spend much time talking to him beyond the usual hey, how it's going, but he finds it hard not to acknowledge Sean's conversations when they have to do with Eduardo, since they are almost universally taunting from Sean's end and Mark rarely answers with anything more than monosyllables. It is not long before this is something that has gotten firmly under Dustin's skin, though he continues to act like everything is super okay, thanks, thanks for asking.

It's the second or third week after Eduardo filed the lawsuit when Sean comes in with a six-pack of Vodka Monsters and a box of chicken pad thai ("That's what people order when they don't know anything about Thai food," Chris grouses later, which is truly a mark of how frustrated he is with everything since normally he tries not to act like the type of snob who wears Burberry and doesn't order chicken pad thai, even though he totally is).

Sean sets the food down in front of Mark, cracks open an alcohol-laced energy drink for himself, and announces, "Dude, I know you have a legal team, but I think we should talk lawsuit."

Chris looks up, scandalized, and then bends his head over his computer. Dustin is fairly confident that he is sending a hasty e-mail to Mark about keeping these things private. From the look on Mark's face a moment later, Dustin can tell that he was right.

To his credit, Mark glances around at the curious eyes of his office staff and says, "Now?"

Sean shrugs. "It's not like I bear the guy any ill-will, but let's face it, it's also not like we owe him the courtesy of not talking shit about him in front of the interns. You know what he did."

Mark rises. "Let's go," he says tersely, and they move into one of the glass-walled conference rooms.

Two of the interns start talking to one another in low voices, and soon a low buzz of conversation fills the room again. For some reason, it is this, more than anything specific that Sean said, that sets Dustin on edge. He can tell that the staff are talking about Eduardo, re-hashing the now-legendary laptop smash, and airing hypotheses about the lawsuit. He glances back when Chris comes up behind him and joins him in watching Sean and Mark behind those glass walls.

"It's hard to really like him when he won't stop doing that thing where he - "

"Tries to turn Mark against Wardo, yeah," Chris agrees quietly.

"He won," Dustin points out, baffled and irritated. "I don't get why he still needs to do that."

Chris shrugs. "Maybe he's not sure how secure his victory is."

Dustin snorts, but that might make sense, in an odd sort of way. Even though Mark shuts Dustin and Chris out of his feelings nowadays, they can still tell that he's hurt and angry about what happened with Eduardo. That Mark maybe misses Eduardo's presence in a way he doesn't admit but doesn't have to. He's snippier with the staff than he ever was before, and he spends more time alone. Mark might not like it, but Chris and Dustin - and Sean, apparently - know him, and it's obvious that these are only symptoms.

And that realization, too, irritates Dustin, because Sean is a reason - perhaps the reason - for all of this. Mark is an asshole, but once upon a time he was a happy asshole, and now he's not.

It is almost an hour before Sean and Mark come out of the conference room. Dustin has his back to them, but he's not wired in, and he, along with everyone else, hears Sean say, "He was bringing you down. When you win the lawsuit, we're going for drinks. Freedom. So chin up, dude."

The way Mark looks - just his face - catches at Dustin's heart as he turns his chair around slowly to look at them. Then, without really being sure of what he plans to do, Dustin rises from his chair. He ignores Chris' startled, "Dustin" as he crosses to Sean, who turns to look at him and suddenly isn't really smiling quite as much.

Re: R1 Re-prompt: Eduardo/Mark + Dustin - dilution scene

Part III

Dustin has no idea that he looks properly irate, and that no one's ever seen him look that way before.

"Dustin, buddy, are you okay?" Sean asks it like maybe Dustin's had a death in the family or something, because Dustin's angry face is a lot like his sad face, just with more eyebrows.

"I don't want to be your buddy," Dustin says. He's breathing heavily through his nose, because he's bad at this, at being angry. He's out of practice. "We can't be friends. I wanted to be friends because I like to be friends with people but you keep doing this thing where you talk about Wardo like - like you need to make him look bad to Mark, and it's not classy, dude, I'm not a fan."

Sean shrugs, looking around for support. He's not wrong here, is he? "He's suing Mark, Dustin. It's not me you should be mad at."

"Eduardo's not walking around in here talking smack about you," Dustin points out, breathless. "He's not, he's not striding around making insinuations that you're an idiot or that you're incompetent or that you deserve everything bad that happens to you. Can't you even tell that Mark doesn't want to listen to that?"

Mark moves slightly in the corner of Dustin's eye, and Sean notices it, too.

"Mark can fight his own battles - " Sean starts, but Dustin interrupts him.

"You don't speak for Mark. I'm Mark's friend, I speak for Mark."

"I thought I spoke for Mark," Mark mutters, but they ignore him.

"Take it easy, dude, I just thought we were all in the same boat," Sean says, holding his hands up in surrender. "You know, Eduardo trying to ruin our company, it's kind of a big deal. Who's side are you on, here?"

"Eduardo's my friend," Dustin says, and finally he's shouting, and he has no idea how he got here except that the stress of the last few weeks is finally working itself loose. "Mark's my friend. Who - who the hell are you?"

The whole office has gone quiet.

Sean knows that they have an audience. Because this is the way he fights, by making snide comments and manipulating people, he says, "I'm the guy who made this company mean something, Moskovitz. Between your dime-a-dozen programming skills and Chris 'Right Place At The Right Time' Hughes - "

And that's it. Dustin hits Sean. He honest-to-God pulls back and punches him, although Dustin's never hit anyone before, so it sort of glances off Sean's jaw and probably hurts Dustin's hand more than anything. Sean ducks away from Dustin and Dustin feels a momentary thrill of ferocious victory before his hand starts to throb and Chris is there, an arm around Dustin's back, gently cradling the throbbing hand as he simultaneously drags Dustin away from Sean.

Re: R1 Re-prompt: Eduardo/Mark + Dustin - dilution scene

Part IV

"My hand hurts," Dustin says, and Chris says, "I know," and keeps pulling him until they're out into the hallway and everything is quiet.

It's the sudden silence that imprints upon Dustin the seriousness of what has just happened. He sags against the wall, suddenly worn out and maybe a little bit in shock.

"I hit him," Dustin says wonderingly.

"You did," Chris agrees, and he doesn't sound nearly as judgmental as Dustin was anticipating.

"Did you pull me away because you thought I was going to hit him again?" Dustin inquires, remembering the insistent way Chris had dragged him from the room.

"No." Chris huffs a brief laugh. "I pulled you away because I thought you were going to apologize."

Dustin stares. Chris, who is leaning against the wall next to him, smiles at nothing in particular as he looks at the wall opposite.

"What can I say? I'm Chris 'Right Place At The Right Time' Hughes."

Dustin grins slowly. "What if Mark fires me for punching Sean?"

"He can just replace you," Chris points out, "because of your dime-a-dozen programming skills."

Dustin sort of loves when Chris doesn't take the high road, since it happens so rarely.

"What do we do now?" He asks.

Chris shrugs. "You're gonna go back in and apologize."

Dustin stares at him. "But. You just said - "

"I know," Chris answers, "but I just - that moment was good. I'll remember that. But now you have to go in there and be an adult and say you're sorry."

Dustin sulks for about two seconds. Then Chris takes his hand and brushes his lips across his knuckles. Dustin is momentarily speechless.

"I kissed it better," Chris explains. "You had that look on your face, like you were going to ask."

Dustin is still staring.

"Go," Chris says, smiling, and gives him a gentle push.

Dustin goes.

Later on, when Dustin's sitting in Mark's office, tossing a stress ball from one hand to the other on Mark's sofa, Mark looks up and says, "You shouldn't have punched Sean."

Dustin's stress ball pauses in its journey. "You shouldn't have let him say punch-worthy things."

Mark gives Dustin a long look. "Maybe."

"Do you think he's gonna press charges?" Dustin asks, not that he's actually particularly worried.

"No." Mark shrugs slightly. "It's Sean. He does whatever I tell him to do."

Dustin recognizes that there has been a fundamental shift somewhere along the line that he didn't notice. Maybe it happened slowly, over time, or maybe it was sudden, but Sean isn't calling the shots anymore, even subtly. Mark is. There is a brief silence. "Mark," Dustin says eventually. "Maybe Wardo was kind of right about Sean."

Mark frowns, but he seems thoughtful. Dustin counts it as a victory when he doesn't disagree.

I'm glad you liked that bit! Sean was so good at manipulating Mark in the beginning, wasn't he? Thanks for the comment!
