(SORRY. I’ve been so busy and I have no idea where this is going.)

After the sun had begun to set, Eduardo rolled into Mark, his eyes blinking back sleep. “What time is it?”

Mark, who heard the rumble of his cell phone from the other side of the room, knew it had to be around five thirty. “Probably about five thirty. I have to go to practice soon, get to see Dustin make moon eyes at Chris for three and a half hours.” His hand slid up the side of Eduardo’s body almost subconsciously, as if he was tracing what he knew was there.

“Can I come?” Eduardo piped up, and Mark rolled his eyes.

“No, the instructions are now since it won’t be a surprise for both of you, it’ll be a surprise for you. A special surprise. Well, not really.”

“Do Dustin and Chris neck during it?”

Mark chuckled. “So now you want to watch a play about your best friend and my best friend making out? I’m surprised you didn’t already see that show earlier today. I didn’t know you were into voyeurism.”

“I’m into anything if it involves you. Naked.”

Mark coughed, a low thing in his throat. “Sadly, you will not see me naked in the show. I’m not very big on nudity.” Eduardo scoffed. “It’s necessary in some situations.”

“I like you so much better when you’re naked.” Eduardo sings, a little off-key, and Mark chuckles.

“I’m sorry I’m not the golden god in this relationship.”

“Golden god?”

“Have you not seen Almost Famous?” Eduardo shook his head. “Dustin and I, we love that movie. You remind me of the rock god in the film – he’s super cool.”

“Super cool? Did you just call me super cool?”

Mark rolled his eyes. As he went to answer, he heard the house phone ring. “Dustin. What a cock block. I thought after he got with Chris he’d be done blocking me, but no, no. My life is not an 80’s comedy film.”

“That’s not the line. At all.”

“Shut up.”

The answering machine kicked on, and both of them were greeting by loud smacking noises and wolf-whistles. “MARK WE HAVE TWO WEEKS UNTIL THE PERFORMANCE AND YOU’RE CODING YOUR LIFE AWAY. PLUS I’M ORDERING ORGANIC CHEESE IF YOU DON’T GET HERE WITHIN TEN MINUTES.” There was laughter from the other side of the phone, and exchanged words with both boys knew were words of flirtation flitting back and forth. Eduardo pretended to gag as Mark laughed, his hand still somewhere in between Eduardo’s waist and hips. “MARKKK. WE’RE RUNNING THROUGH THE WHOLE THING TONIGHT AND I WANT YOU TO WATCH CHRIS MESS UP.”

“SHUT THE FUCK UP MOSCOVITZ OR I’LL KILL YOU.” By this point Eduardo was full on laughing.

“Did you get my text?” Mark whispered, and Eduardo giggled like a five year old. He didn’t care, only Mark could see him.

“Why didn’t you text me back then?”

With that, the two of them snickered over the continuation of Dustin’s rant. “Seriously Mark, eight minutes and you’re going to be stuck with that gouda pizza Ellen loves and I won’t share my turkey pepperoni with you at all. You’ll be stuck in the vegan no-man’s land.” Mark groaned and pulled himself out of bed, Eduardo laughing as he flopped out of his pants, pulling on some pants that looked old and musty, zipping himself up with one hand while running the other through his hair. “I really have to go.”

“Mhm.” Eduardo echoed, sitting up on his elbows. “I might as well just stay for dinner, entertain the parents, clean this.” He motioned to the hurricane of Mark’s room.

“Actually, if you wanted to be adventurous, you could figure out what size I’d be in a suit. Normally I either wear my dress shirts with my dad’s too long jackets or my sister finds me dressy pants to wear with my button downs, but I want to look nice for the dance next week.”

“Oh Mark, you want me to dress you?” Eduardo cackled as Mark rolled his eyes, bending down to give him a goodbye kiss. “I’d be honored.”

“Fuck off.”

Practice, as predicted, was a showing off of who was cuter, Chris or Dustin. Mark gagged when Rebecca suggested they should make out during the scene where they inducted all of the virgins. He didn’t want to see that – ever. Dustin was still as pure as the driven snow as far as Mark was concerned, and he would stay that way. Mark enjoyed being the criminologist – he had a big enough part that people knew who he was, but he didn’t have to be objectified and he got to shout at Dustin. A lot. He found it gratifying, especially when Dustin played with his hair and jokingly pulled at Ellen’s bra strap. No one messed with Ellen.

Well, Dustin could and Mark wouldn’t kill him, but Ellen was sacred ground. At least she only teased Chris, and he didn’t tease back. Chris was already so much up in Mark’s business that it had begun to become a threat to his well being.

Then Mark saw Chris act, and he had to admit, Chris was kind of awful. It was hilarious because Chris was so self-conscious about those damn shorts that he kept pulling them down instead of dancing around. It wasn’t until Frank said something to him and handed what looked like a roll of tape to Chris did he relax.

So Mark figured maybe he should muster a little sympathy for the dude, because Chris was doing it so Mark didn’t have to.

Friday was a flurry of work. Chris, Dustin and Eduardo all had to get to school early to film for Homecoming Court. Dustin had honestly gone in his favorite dark wash jeans and a white button down to tell them that he wanted to resign, but he got goaded into it because he got to dress up every day of Spirit Week – not like he didn’t anyway –and this year he got to wear a sash. And, if he won, he got a crown. Plus he got free admission to the homecoming football game and the dance, so he stays on, bothers Chris and watches the Winklevoss twins argue about something. Dustin has a soft spot for Cameron after Cameron spent three hours explaining how he was in love with Evil Divya the Diva from American Apparel and he didn’t understand why Divya had decided to go on a date with Erica, Cameron didn’t do anything wrong.

Cameron was a little sensitive. In secret, Dustin hoped he won.

After that, they had school, where Dustin and Chris got The Talk from Mr. Long, who had caught them making out right before class. Dustin may have had Chris in a compromising position, back up against the wall, wrists pinned, but it’s not like they were some of those weirdos that had sex on school property.

Then play practice, where they ran through the first act of the play. Katie had a cold but she could still sing, and they were not that bad. Mrs. Streep had told them they’d been pushed back a week because of some reunion they had to have the auditiorium for, and Chris knew there was a god. Rocky Horror was next weekend, and he had Homecoming too and how nuts was this – he actually got weeks off between shows. He had been worried he’d be exhausted after Rocky, but now he had a break.

After was Rocky practice, and Chris didn’t stutter this time. Dustin grinned at him as if he had won him an Academy Award instead of not tumbling out of the tank, not having fish hands when Ellen pressed herself up against him.

That night, Dustin drove Chris out to a parking lot and they held hands, talking about nothing in particular.

And that’s when it hit Chris – Dustin was just as hip as he was, though he had a penchant for Ke$ha and danced like a maniac. Because Dustin made him feel better about himself. He had enthusiasm, he had skills, he danced around in leather pants because he had them.

Hours long practices continued all weekend, leaving Eduardo to muddle around The Grindhouse. He spent a while actually trying to do homework – he’d missed out on the writing of the script for English class, which involved what seemed to be a very gay version of As You Like It which involved Mark running around in tights and Eduardo courted him with a lute. Obviously Kitty and Erica had gone a little overboard with this whole recreation thing, but it wasn’t due until the last week of December, so he started to wade through the papers.

After spending two hours bent over the script with no sign of anyone entering to keep him entertained, Eduardo decided to screw it and go shopping. He already had a suit for the semi-formal Homecoming dance, and he had gotten away with telling his mom that since he was on court, he had to go take court pictures.

Instead Mark’s mom had called him and scheduled pictures for all four of them in their garden for the hour before they went to dinner. Eduardo doubted it would take an hour for pictures, but then again he knew Mark and Mark would try and avoid getting out of them.

Sliding into his favorite tux shop, he saw Christy – who worked here, oh god – smile at him and start to head over, but she was cut off by Robert, the strange British dude that always looked like his hair had been shocked by lightning , but was nice otherwise. He’d been one of their biggest patrons on open mic coffee shop night, bringing his strange foreign friends in and having them recite random Ginsberg poems and giggling into their apparently spiked coffee.

Money was money though, and Robert had fitted him with a great suit for the pitch to his father about the expansion of the shop – though it hadn’t gone over well – so he smiled and met Robert with a firm handshake.

“Lovely to see you again, Eduardo. Time for another suit? Thought you said you had plenty.”

“Wonderful to see you again as well, Robert. It’s not for me this time.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket, scrolling down to find his notes. “The person I’m buying for is 26 in the waist and I mean, I don’t know if you have a 33 in jacket, maybe a 34.”

“Is this person you’re buying for a stick or a mannequin or something? 26’, Jesus man that’s like he’s wasting away.”

Eduardo frowned. “I know, I’ve been trying to get him to eat but some people, you know, they have instant metabolism and stuff. He doesn’t really understand clothes that much.” Robert nods in understanding.

“Clothes are a rough business, and a bitch if you don’t listen to your instincts. What’s the coloring like – you going for a brown, a black, a pinstripe?”

“I’d like a plain black with a royal blue shirt, no tie, and maybe a pinstripe if you can find it in a lighter blue with a matching shirt.” Robert nodded and gestured vaguely over to the refreshments area. Eduardo pulled a water bottle out of their mini-fridge and sipped at it as Christy watched him from her place at the registers, looking somewhat confused. She hadn’t heart it, but he knew she was confused as to why he was just pandering instead of in one of the dressing rooms, stripping.
He sipped the water quickly, hoping to avoid eye contact.

Once Robert brought out the choices, it was obvious the light blue shirt with the plain black suit – two buttons, you couldn’t go wrong – was going to be what Mark was wearing. When Eduardo tried the jacket on, he could fit into it, so Eduardo asked Robert to pull the waist in two inches.

After going up to the register to pay and get a time frame to come pick it up, there was a look in Christy’s eyes that Eduardo didn’t know if he felt comfortable with or not.

“Is it for Mark?” She asked quietly, and Eduardo was kind of shocked. No one knew about him and Mark – well, besides, Chris. Dustin. Mr. Gilliam. Probably Mr. Snyder since Mark thought they’d teamed up to make fun of him.

“Cool – he’ll look good in the blue.”

Eduardo raised an eyebrow, but he saw no malice in the brown eyes meeting his. He pulled out his credit card. “Thanks.”
