WARN FOR COMMON TRIGGERS, PLEASE

Fill: Marriage is Just Another Word for Mistake (3/3)

(Anonymous)
Mark was still staring ahead, as if the evil glares that he shot in the direction of the other cars would make them move faster.

"I did it on a lark," Eduardo finally said, lamely. "I didn't really to expect you to say yes."

"So you kissed me 'on a lark' -"here Mark made actual quotation marks in the air – "too?"

"That was college! You experiment."

"You call a year full of hook-ups after we got married 'experimenting'?

This time Mark didn't even have to make finger quotation marks.

Eduardo's response sounded weak, even to himself. "Uhm... yes?"

Mark shot him a look, the first one since they got in the car. It was focused, like a laser and Eduardo got instantly hot under his collar. He felt his ears go red.

"You're lying," Mark said.

Eduardo hated how Mark always put him on the defensive.

"You cheated on me with Erica, so it probably never mattered to you either."

"That was a mistake," Mark mumbled, eyes back on the traffic.

Eduardo found his footing again: "This marriage was a mistake."

The car came to a sudden stop. Behind them several cars began to honk. In the car it was silent.

"It wasn't," Mark said quietly as he started the car again. "We might have made a lot of mistakes... I might have made a lot of mistakes but getting married isn't one of them."

Eduardo didn't say anything.

"I'm sorry about Erica," Mark continued. "She was... I was just trying to prove... she never mattered like you did."

"And I never mattered like Facebook did." Eduardo didn't even need to make that a question, he already had his answer.

"You did. You mattered. Facebook mattered."

Mark went silent again. He had parked the car in a suburban neighborhood, in front of normal house with a well-kept lawn, missing only the white picket fence to add to its perfect middle-class mediocrity.

"It just seemed that nothing mattered to you," Mark said. Then he pointed at the house. "That's my home, by the way."

He looked at Eduardo again, his eyes soft. Vulnerable. Hopeful.

"It's yours, too, Wardo."

Eduardo knew that he had booked a hotel room. He knew that he could ask Mark to drive him to the hotel, he knew he would. He knew if he did, Mark would sign the papers. Perhaps not immediately but soon afterwards.

He knew this while he got out of the car. He knew this while he grabbed his bag. He knew this while he climbed the steps to the door of Mark's house. To what Mark had called their home.

He knew that he was probably making a mistake, that there was no way this could not be a mistake. He knew that the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again, hoping for a different result.

He knew and it made it no difference. It was Mark. It always had been - it always would be. In good times, and in bad times, for better, and for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in health, it would always be Mark who would be worth making a mistake for.

Re: Fill: Marriage is Just Another Word for Mistake (3/3)

The last line is just beautiful. And I like that Eduardo and Mark have both made mistakes, both hurt each other, and can now forgive and start again.

Re: Fill: Marriage is Just Another Word for Mistake (3/3)

I just found this and it is fucking awesome. You get SO MUCH accomplished in a relatively short piece, and you tell us SO MUCH about Mark and Eduardo here. It's funny and angsty and sweet and romantic all at once. ALSO META SHOUTOUT TO BEN MEZRICH. I would read a billion words in this 'verse.
