The rest of the week went by in a flurry of studying for history tests, econ projects, flirty text messages and Eduardo insulting Chris’ intelligence every time Chris walked into the room, which got Chris very frustrated. What also kept him frustrated was the fact that Eduardo had a boyfriend, who walked him to his car, sent him occasionally unreadable but sweet text messages, who was at least respected by Chris, and that Chris had seen the stolen kisses between the two as Chris complained to Dustin, who just seemed to sink lower and lower into his sweater every time Chris mentioned it.

Chris didn’t know what everyone’s problem was.

The read through for the musical went well – everyone who was cast as a major role had instant chemistry, and the tension that had built in Chris’ shoulders lessened as he shed Chris and put on Fred, at least for an hour and a half.

Then it was a weekend of work for all three of them – Eduardo doing some FBLA planning, Mark being forced to go to Temple with his mom for her birthday and then actual work with Ellen plus practice, Chris dividing his time between a rough AP French assignment and the coffee house, and Dustin just worked and had practice.

During practice, Mark slid over to Dustin, who had been lurking in the shadows of the large stage. “Dustin, what’s wrong?”

“I just don’t understand him. I thought I did – I thought I’d finally got him to see the light. But now he just stares at my gifts and moans to me and I can’t – I can’t tell him I’m the one doing this. He’d be heartbroken. He’s not interested in me – he’s interested in the idea of me.”

“Well then stop.”

Dustin turned his head towards Mark, an eerily makeup covered eyebrow raised. It would be ridiculous if it was anyone besides Dustin. “Stop?”

“Yeah, stop. Ignore him in classes, hang out with Erica. At least you know she likes you and won’t complain about mystery men leaving him incredibly well done mixes for him. You’re not at his beck and call, you can still do what you want Dustin.”

“Is that you saying you don’t like being with Eduardo?”

“No.” Mark shook his head. Sometimes Dustin was dense. “I see love as Descartes’ last theorem. People try and try and try again, but it takes a person who’s really committed to it to solve it. But, then again, sometimes dedication just isn’t enough. You’ve been at this for almost ten years, everyone needs a break.”

“I haven’t spent ten years on this plan!” Dustin whined.

“But you have spent ten years pining after him. Maybe you should meet someone else? I mean, that’s what I did.”

“You mean like Tyler, who harassed you into coming to his house, then the two of you made out because he wanted you to try on his clothes from ninth grade and you said no and he backed you up into a wall?”

“We spent a significant amount of time together. The only person that I have more one on one face time with that isn’t related to me is you.”

“Really?” He forgot that though Mark had Eduardo now, Mark still considered Dustin his best friend. “I thought Eduardo was your best friend now.”

“No, dickhead, I’m here with you and your dumb ass on a Saturday night when I totally got an offer from my sexy boyfriend to ditch and make out on his couch. This is the second time this week I’ve ditched him for you this week. Of course you’re my best friend. Asshole.”

Dustin grabbed Mark, and though many people in their company described the look of when Dustin hugged Mark as a look of a live person hugging the dead, it made Dustin feel better. “Lets get back to work!” Dustin chirped after hugging Mark’s unmoving body for a minute, and Mark laughed. Sometimes Dustin was too simple.

The next week brought a teacher workday on Monday, which Mark spent texting Eduardo and playing Black Ops with Dustin. Eduardo went to his father’s office and had a meeting about financials for the coffee shop, which his father always sneers at until he sees the profit reports. He had bought it was more of an summer experiment for Eduardo, not to make him an entrepreneur. His father always grumbled about how this was just supposed to be a hobby, not a passion, but Eduardo had learned to ignore his father’s comments long ago. Of course, his father had only been to The Grindhouse in the mornings when mostly math majors came in, nursing their teas over their Advanced Calculus books. He didn’t know about the burgeoning safe house that it had become for some of the more scared LBGT kids in the city, and an escape for those who weren’t out to their parents. Though only about a fourth of the employees were either bi, lesbian, or gay, they all accepted whoever came in the door, and treated them with respect. It was why his business was booming, though his father didn’t know it.

Neither did his father know his new friend from school was now his boyfriend, though his mother had told him that she knew that he was up to something, and she was watching him. It scared him a bit, but his mother had kind of guessed at his sexuality when she had come to pick him up from school after throwing that kid into a locker. His father had never been told the real reason Eduardo had almost been suspended from school, though he did approve of his son sticking up for his friends and that the school found the other kid responsible for provoking Eduardo into hitting back. It made Eduardo look tough.

The next day was an off Tuesday for FBLA, and Chris’ day off, so Mark dragged Dustin to The Grindhouse so Dustin would get out of his house and off of Black Ops – Dustin was way more focused on video games than coding.
Dustin loved it. Dustin also enjoyed Hostel, Hostel II, and couldn’t wait for Thanksgiving. He was a huge Eli Roth fan, and the fact that Eli was from Boston really got him into, as Mark fondly called it, “Eli Watching”.
As Dustin motioned about, talking about how he’d spent the day after Thanksgiving walking around Newton, Mark texted Eduardo with one hand, the other one slung casually over the back of Eduardo’s chair.

I’m sorry Dustin’s a giant freak. He’s been bummed lately, so I guess this is payback.

After Eduardo had read it and Dustin had taken out his own phone to mournfully stare at it, Eduardo rolled his eyes at Mark. “It’s fine, Mark.” Eduardo whispered, getting closer to Mark so Dustin didn’t hear him. “He’s kind of endearing.”

Mark grinned – it was the reason Mark kept Dustin around. The cute factor. It worked on everyone, including Mark. “Yeah.”

Then, a figure hovered over their table, and all three turned to see Antonio from Tufts standing over their table. “Hey guys!”

“Hey Antonio.” Eduardo answered easily, dropping his hand to Mark’s knee. He was very protective of Mark now, even if he knew that Antonio was totally into Chris. “You remember Mark,” Mark nodded, “and this is his best friend, Dustin.”

“Hi!” Dustin enthused, sticking out his hand for a shake.

“Well, hi there.”

And suddenly the worst idea ever popped into Mark’s head. “You should join us – we’re talking about Eli Roth and the Splat Pack.”

“I loved that guy in Inglourious Basterds.” Antonio conceded, and Dustin motioned to him to pull up a chair.

Eduardo elbowed Mark in the stomach. “What are you doing?” Mark shrugged. “Mark, I know what you’re thinking. This is not some sappy 80’s comedy. This is the happiness of your best friend and mine.”

“So? Look, Dustin’s been in love with Chris for ten years. He needs to, you know, actually get experience so he’ll gain some confidence so he won’t choke the next time he tries to ask Chris on a date. Let the cards fall.” Eduardo huffed and slid back into his seat as the two boys talked.

By rehearsal on Friday Chris was desolate. He had no new CD’s or communication of any kind, Dustin had ignored him most of the day for his cell phone, and Eduardo had what looked like a hickey on his left collarbone, which just made Chris more pissed. Eduardo also kept saying to read the signs, sounding like a bad sixties song. It was enough to drive a perfectly good boy to homicide. Plus he had to work tomorrow, ruining the chance of cornering Dustin to see if he knew anything before him and Mark’s rehearsal for whatever tomorrow.

He and Katie ran lines while he watched Dustin and Erica, both laughing about something, Dustin waving his fingers in the air like he was some sort of interpretive dancer, Erica laughing as they read out their lines. As Dustin danced around Erica, an idea struck Chris – he could just force Dustin to hang out with him tonight. He had asked Dustin about his work schedule, and that he only worked every other Friday, and today he had to have off.

Flawless.

But after the group ran the first couple of scenes together and rehearsal ended, Dustin bolted out of the auditorium like a bat out of hell, which meant that Chris had to hurry to catch up with him, leaving Eduardo in the cold as he hustled out to the student parking lot, where Dustin waited at the curb, phone out.

“Dustin! Hey Dustin!” He saw Mark’s car at the stoplight. “Hey, wait up for a second!” It was obvious Dustin didn’t hear him, Chris knew that he would turn around if he had. But at the same time, he had been sort of a shitty friend this week, and Dustin had gotten way more distracted after Wednesday, always checking his phone and only half listening to Chris, as if something was making him uncomfortable in his skin. As he skidded next to Dustin, the light changed for Mark, so Chris knew he had to act fast.

“Hey, Dustin, I know it’s your night off, so could we like, hang out or something?”

Dustin looked up at him like Chris, instead of asking him to hang, had told him to hang himself. Chris was hurt because he hadn’t meant to hurt Dustin, yet it was obvious he had offended the other boy. “No, I can’t Chris. I already have plans.”

“I’m sure Mark will understand if you cancel –"

“They aren’t with Mark, and that’s besides the point because I wouldn’t ever cancel on Mark, like he wouldn’t ever cancel on me. He’s my best friend, and I keep my promises to my friends.” Chris was still very confused. “I have a date, since it seems like every boy in this high school is either an idiot or not interested, so I have to go home and get ready. Thanks for the pity hang out.”

By this time, Mark had pulled up, and Chris could hear Eduardo’s shoes from behind him. Dustin pulled open the door to Mark’s car quickly; once he had chucked his bag into the car, he then threw himself into the seat and slammed the door. After he put on his seatbelt, Mark proceeded to speed off, confusing Chris even more.

“I don’t understand what I’ve done.” He said, mostly to himself, but Eduardo heard him, standing behind his right shoulder.

“I don’t understand how Antonio from Tufts got Dustin to go on a date with him, but you see life doesn’t always make sense.”

Chris gave Eduardo a look of horror, but Eduardo shrugged. “ I didn’t even know Dustin was into dudes.”

Eduardo huffed, and Chris was confused. “For like number fifteen in our class, you really are getting dumb, Chris.” Chris scoffed at him, but he had to admit right now he felt like he was missing something.

He also felt jealousy in the pit of his stomach, knowing Dick in a box was going to have his hands all over Dustin later on.
